POLICY OVERVIEW

Purpose

The Neighborhood Clinic maintains procedures for the safe use, handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals used throughout the organization.

Employees must follow product labels, Safety Data Sheets, manufacturer instructions, and clinic safety requirements whenever working with a chemical product.

Read Before Use

Review the product label and instructions before using any unfamiliar chemical.

Wear gloves, eye protection, gowns, masks, or other protective equipment when required.

Report damaged containers, missing labels, spills, exposures, or unsafe storage immediately.

AUTHORIZED PRODUCTS

Approved Chemical Use

Only approved clinic products may be used.

Employees must not bring chemicals, cleaners, disinfectants, pesticides, air fresheners, or other chemical products from home without leadership approval.

Use the correct chemical for the assigned task.

Follow the required dilution instructions.

Observe required disinfectant contact times.

Never combine products unless specifically instructed.

Keep Safety Data Sheets accessible to employees.

Discontinue use of damaged or leaking containers.

HAZARD COMMUNICATION

Chemical Labeling Requirements

Every chemical container must be clearly labeled so employees can identify the product and understand its hazards.

Product Name

The chemical or product name must be clearly visible.

Hazard Information

Required warnings, symbols, and hazard statements must remain intact.

Manufacturer Details

The manufacturer or supplier information should remain available.

Secondary Containers

Any chemical transferred into another container must be labeled immediately.

Never use a chemical from an unlabeled container. Remove the container from service and notify leadership.

SAFE STORAGE

Chemical Storage Requirements

Keep Containers Closed

Caps, lids, and dispensing mechanisms must remain securely closed when products are not in use.

Use Designated Areas

Store chemicals only in approved cabinets, closets, or supply areas.

Separate Incompatible Products

Chemicals that may react with one another must be stored separately.

Protect Patients and Children

Chemicals must never be left unattended in patient rooms or public areas.

Keep Away From Food

Chemicals must not be stored near food, beverages, medications, or employee belongings.

Check containers for leaks, damage, deterioration, and expired products.

IMMEDIATE ACTION

Chemical Spill Response

Do not attempt to clean an unknown or dangerous spill.

Protect yourself first. Keep patients and staff away from the area, notify leadership, and review the product’s Safety Data Sheet before beginning cleanup.

Stop and Assess

Identify the product when possible and determine whether anyone has been exposed or injured.

Secure the Area

Keep patients, visitors, and employees away from the spill and prevent anyone from walking through it.

Notify Leadership

Contact the onsite supervisor or designated clinic leader immediately.

Review the SDS

Confirm required PPE, ventilation, cleanup procedures, and disposal instructions.

Wear Required PPE

Use gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, or respiratory protection as directed.

Clean and Dispose Safely

Use the appropriate spill materials and place contaminated waste in the designated disposal container.

Document the Incident

Report the spill, exposure, damaged container, or unsafe condition according to clinic incident-reporting procedures.

EMPLOYEE SAFETY

Chemical Exposure Response

EYES

Eye Exposure

Begin flushing the affected eye immediately with clean water or an eyewash solution.

Continue flushing for the time directed by the product label or Safety Data Sheet and obtain medical evaluation.

SKIN

Skin Exposure

Remove contaminated clothing and rinse the affected skin immediately with water.

Do not apply creams, neutralizing agents, or other products unless specifically directed.

INHALED

Inhalation Exposure

Move away from the chemical and into fresh air when it is safe to do so.

Seek immediate emergency assistance for breathing difficulty, dizziness, confusion, or loss of consciousness.

SWALLOWED

Ingestion

Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed by a medical professional or Poison Control.

Contact emergency services or Poison Control and provide the product label or Safety Data Sheet.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Call 911 for severe or life-threatening symptoms.

Employees must notify leadership immediately following any chemical exposure, even when symptoms appear minor.

UNSAFE PRACTICES

Never Do the Following

Mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or other cleaning products.

Use an unlabeled chemical or an unidentified solution.

Transfer chemicals into food or beverage containers.

×

Smell or taste a chemical to identify it.

×

Use a product for a purpose not listed by the manufacturer.

Leave chemicals unattended in patient or public areas.

×

Clean a major spill without proper training and PPE.

×

Dispose of chemicals in a sink or regular trash unless approved.
